A new virtual meeting place to strengthen newcomer connections

August 10, 2022

About three years ago, Windmill started a mentorship program. The idea had been suggested by former Windmill clients, our alumni, who said that they would have appreciated this kind of help and would be happy to provide it to other newcomers. So, we started pairing our alumni with our current clients to help them succeed on their professional journeys.

Windmill’s thriving mentorship program now has more than 500 participants. We wondered if we could do more to build a richer community. We could bring together our active clients, alumni and working professionals to share their advice and experiences. New clients could become integrated earlier into their professional communities which we know is essential to their career success.

We are excited to share that we recently launched a new resource to achieve this, thanks in part to the support of the Alberta Immigrant Mentorship Innovation Grant. The Windmill Community Success Hub offers a variety of employment resources and a job board. Our clients can search a directory of volunteers offering advice by sector, job title and geography. They can set up a meeting, chat or video call with others on the platform and ask for immediate assistance with a specific employment-related challenge such as an introduction, resume writing or interview preparation.

One of the most popular features on the Community Success Hub is the job board. We currently have roles posted with Deloitte, Ian Martin Group, KPMG, Sunnybrook, Canadian Western Bank and University Health Network (UHN). We are adding more jobs each month.

If you or an employer you know is interested in posting jobs on our job board or if you would be interested in participating in the Community Success Hub, as a mentor, please reach out to Shannon@teamwindmill.org.

We are delighted to see the engagement this new hub is generating, allowing our community to connect and support one another – empowering newcomers to rise to their full career potential.
